Plants vs. Zombies is a game by PopCap in which you have to plant various species of flowers in your garden to keep the zombies at bay. Whether you're nailing them with Pea Shooters, blowing them up with Cherry Bombs, or running them over with your lawn mower, those zombies don't stand a chance.
Pros
Good introduction: When you first open the app, you can jump right into playing, as the app walks you through the first few levels. This way, you'll get the basics down quickly and can continue to apply them as the levels increase in difficulty, and more variables are introduced.
Nice graphics: The characters in this game are cartoony, but well detailed and fun. Just about every element of the game is moving almost the whole time, slowly swaying to the eerie music playing in the background, which sets the perfect tone for the game's action.
Cons
Slow loading: The game is a little slow loading, probably because of the high-quality graphics. But once it gets going, it runs smoothly.
Timed trial: When you download Plants vs. Zombies, you have one hour to try it for free. To keep playing after that, you'll have to purchase the full version for $6.99.
Bottom Line
Plants vs. Zombies is engaging, bordering on addictive, with tons of levels for you to work your way through. It would be nice if the free trial period was a bit longer, but it shouldn't take you long to get a feel for the game and decide whether it's something you'd like to spend money on.
Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Plants vs. Zombies 1.3

Over the years, PopCap Games has created some of the most addictive and well-known casual games on the market. Titles like Bejeweled and Peggle have stolen countless hours of our time due to being just so hard to put down.
Unfortunately, PopCap Games retired many of their games over the years, and since EA acquired the company in 2011, almost every attempt to play an old PopCap Games title redirects you to EA.com where there's little help in finding a valid link where you can play or download the game for free.
If you haven't yet experienced the joy of a PopCap game, there are plenty of ways you can test a few of them out without dropping a dime.
Bejeweled
There are many different versions of this popular match-three puzzle game and just as many ways to play it for free. There are three versions: Classic, Blitz, and Stars.
If you're in the mood for a quick fix of jewel matching action, there's the excellent Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook, which has you playing the game in one-minute spurts. The same game runs on iOS and Android.
With the Bejeweled Stars edition — also available on Facebook, Android, and iOS — you have new ways to match the gems, lifting up gem-filled Clouds into different sections of the board to set off a cascade, moving Glaciers of gems around the board, and Currents that move strings of gems. You can connect and compete with friends, which turns it into a social game.
What We Like
Several iterations of the same game mean there are lots of places to play it
What We Don't Like
You need a mobile device to play the original Bejeweled Classic
Plants vs. Zombies
Zombies are coming and you have only zombie-zapping plants to fight them off. This may be PopCap's most addictive game with hilarious strategy.
The original Plants vs Zombies game is free for iPhone and Android users. There are over 25 zombies to battle in the 50 levels of Adventure mode.
Plants vs. Zombies 2 has over 300 levels, some really challenging. The game is available for free for iPad and iPhone on the iOS App Store, and for Android devices via Google Play.
There's also a free Plants vs. Zombies: Heroes app for iOS and Android where you can collect heroes like Green Shadow, Super Brainz, Grass Knuckles, and Impfinity.
Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2: Deluxe Edition is available for purchase for PCs, Xbox One, and PS4.
What We Like
All three of these games work on mobile devices
What We Don't Like
There isn't a free web-based version
Peggle
Imagine pachinko mixed with an arcade game set in a magical land of unicorns, and you'll have Peggle: an excellent way to spend an afternoon (which may very well turn into an evening). The classic version is comprised of 55 levels featuring themes from the ultra-popular MMO World of Warcraft.
Currently, the only free version of Peggle is Peggle Blast. It's available for iOS and Android devices.
Although the classic Peggle game was retired by PopCap Games in 2017, you can download a free trial of Peggle Deluxe through Pogo. The game is free for one hour after which you can choose to buy it if you like. The classic Peggle game is available from Origin, too, possibly at a cheaper price than Pogo.
Get 60 levels in the night-themed Peggle Nights game. It's also from Pogo, so it's only free during the trial period.
Peggle 2 is the sequel to the original Peggle game, but it's not free to play. You can purchase Peggle 2 for Xbox and PS4.
What We Like
Peggle Blast can be played anywhere with the mobile app
Peggle Deluxe runs in full-screen mode or regular window mode
As you progress through Adventure mode, you can replay specific levels in Quick Play mode
Duel mode lets you play Peggle against the computer or a friend
What We Don't Like
The classic Peggle game is only free during the trial
Solitaire Blitz
Solitaire Blitz is another game PopCap Games retired in 2017, but it's still 100 percent playable if you know where to look.
The easiest way for most people to play Solitaire Blitz is through the Facebook app. If you have Windows 8, you can also play through Pokki, which is a Start menu replacement program; once it's installed, use its built-in app store to download Solitaire Blitz.
The Solitaire Blitz game is a great way to have fun with little time because you can play short solitaire games and collect bits of treasure to solve the mystery of who sank the King's ship. You can see your Facebook friends who also play the game and what their scores are.
What We Don't Like
You have to have a Facebook account to play
No mobile app available to take the game with you
Bookworm
If you like word games, you'll love Bookworm. From the collection of letter tiles, form as many words as you can. Just click and drag your mouse cursor through the tiles to make words from the scrambled letters
As you see the green tiles, use them in your words for more points, and be sure to get rid of the burning tiles before they reach the bottom of the board!
